As members of the Salvation Army both the Cottam and Pritchard families
took part in the traditional Lancashire christian witness the Whitsuntide Walk. A parade of bands and banners through
the towns with everyone involved, especially children being dressed up for the occasion. Many of the Salvationists wore
the uniform of course including members of our family. Here are a few pictures of the 'processions' in Denton and Ashton.
STAMFORD STREET AT WHITSUN It is little
I repair to the marches of the Whitsun Folk, Though my own red ribbons there may blow. It is little
I repair to the marches of the Whitsun folk Though smart, new tunics mark the bands I know . For
my ears are full of cheers as I travel back the years To the banners flying under leaden skies. And
I smile a little sadly as I wipe away the tears For Herbert and my father long ago, long ago. For
Herbert and my father long ago.. Margaret White (nee Pritchard)
