The Bandstand, Victoria Park
When
George Pritchard (1897) and Nellie Cottam left Co. Durham for Denton with the intention of getting married they went to Nellie’s
mother Clara at 302, Manchester Road and George was taken in as a boarder. They
both found jobs with Lancashire Felt (an American Company) which was less than five minutes walk from their front door. On 1st June 1928 they married at the United Methodist Church on Hyde Road, Denton.

George
was unhappy at Lancashire Felt, had an argument with the foreman and left. He
soon found a job at Oldhams Batteries where he found that the wages were better and the firm a happier place to work. However
he wasn’t happy in Denton, missed the north east of England and persuaded
Nellie to abandon her hometown and take their baby son back to Co. Durham.
